Thanks for testing EduNotes.
What I would like from you in this beta is simple: use EduNotes the way you really teach, study, or present, and tell me whenever it lets you down. Telling me what works and what you like matters a lot too. It tells me what's already solid and which direction to keep following.
I have provided test cards to make the process easier for you. However, if they don't help you, it is also enough to just fill in the weekly check-in form with your comments or the use the feedback feature in Testflight for bugs.
Before you start
1. Install
- Install TestFlight from the App Store on each device you'll test on.
- Open the TestFlight invitation email from Apple on that device and tap View in TestFlight.
- Accept, then install EduNotes. Turn on automatic updates so you're always on the current build.
Find your version and build number in TestFlight, for example 1.0 (42).
2. Protect your work
- Work on copies of your documents, never your only version.
- Keep backups of anything you annotate during the beta by exporting it from the app.
- Have a fallback ready when presenting to a real audience.
Version and build number are also found in the app settings in the About section under Version and Build.
3. Your week
Ideally, if you can, aim for:- A couple of guided sessions of 10–20 minutes, following test cards.
- At least one ordinary study or teaching session, used your normal way.
- A short check-in at the end of the week.
Please always include the version and build number from either TestFlight or the app settings. Every report needs them.
What matters most
Report failures in any of these areas right away, even if they only happened once.
Your work survives
Ink is still there after closing, reopening, interruptions, and syncing. Original documents never change.
Writing feels immediate
No lag, missing strokes, or ink landing in the wrong place, even after long sessions.
Presenting is dependable
The audience screen shows the right page with live ink and none of your controls, whether wired or with AirPlay.
Big documents stay usable
Files of hundreds of MB import with visible progress and stay responsive to navigate and annotate.
Using EduNotes in another language?
EduNotes is translated into English, Italian, Portuguese, Japanese, and Russian, but I am only a native speaker of Italian, so I'd like a review by native readers of the other languages, as well as a second eye for typos and omissions.
If you are a native or fluent speaker of one of these languages, please use the app in that language for at least some of the time. Flag anything clipped, cut off, awkward, or misleading in toolbars, dialogs, errors, and onboarding. Report it like any other problem, for example [S3] [Localization-IT] "Esporta" button text clipped on iPhone.
Your setup
Filled in once, attached to every card you send. It's remembered on this device, so update it whenever you switch device or build.
Test cards
You'll be assigned one or two cards per build. Work through each line and mark it, then send the card. Use disposable copies for anything that interrupts saving or syncing. Your progress is saved on this device as you go.
How to mark each line
- Pass
- You did it and everything behaved as described.
- Fail
- You did it and EduNotes got it wrong: missing or misplaced ink, wrong content on the audience screen, a crash, noticeable lag, or a confusing result. Report it in TestFlight and add the feedback ID to the card.
- Blocked
- You tried, but something else stopped you before you could tell whether this line works. For example, an earlier step failed, the app crashed on the way there, or your school network blocked AirPlay. Say what stopped you in the notes.
- Not tested
- You didn't try it: it doesn't apply to your device, you don't have the equipment, or you ran out of time. That's fine. It shows us where we need other testers.
Overall result: Fail if any line failed. Otherwise Blocked if you couldn't get far enough to judge the card. Otherwise Pass. Lines left unmarked are sent as Not tested.
A Large-document teaching session Assigned to you
Takes about 30–40 minutes. Use a representative large document: a scanned textbook or a long slide deck exported to PDF.
- Import the large document and note its size and page count.
- Confirm there is visible progress or activity while it imports.
- Navigate between distant pages, zoom, and rotate where supported.
- Write continuously, erase, undo/redo, and switch tools.
- Add dense ink to several pages and keep going for 20–30 minutes.
- Close and reopen. Check that your annotations and position in the document are intact.
- Export, then reopen on another platform. Check that the ink is complete and correctly aligned.
B Presentation Assigned to you
You'll need a projector, external display, or AirPlay receiver. Look at the audience display itself, not just your device.
- Connect wired or via AirPlay and start Presentation Mode.
- On the audience display: correct page, correct orientation, no controls or private content visible.
- Write, erase, change pages, and switch tools. The audience display follows each change.
- Disconnect while writing, reconnect, and carry on.
- Change the display's orientation or resolution, or switch to another display, if your equipment allows.
- Lock and unlock, then background and return to EduNotes while presenting.
- End the presentation. Normal editing works and all your ink is still there.
C Persistence, offline use, and sync Assigned to you
Use disposable documents only. The first group needs one device. The sync groups need two, signed in to the same sync method. Mark the methods you can't use Not tested. Force-quitting is enough: please don't try to crash the app or your device.
How saving and sync work
- EduNotes saves automatically about a second after you stop writing, and straight away when you close a document. There is no Save button.
- Sync only runs when you ask: pull down on the document list on iPad and iPhone, or press ⌘R (or Sync Now) on the Mac. Wait for the result message, such as "Sent 3 changes", before syncing the other device.
- iCloud and EduNotes Server: a change should arrive on the other device's first sync. Shared Folder: your cloud service finishes the upload in the background, so wait about 2 minutes before syncing the other device. It's a Fail if the change hasn't arrived after two syncs (about 5 minutes for a shared folder).
- A document can appear on the other device as Downloading… before its contents arrive. That's expected.
Saving and offline (one device)
- In airplane mode: import a PDF, annotate it, close and reopen it, and export it. Everything works and nothing looks different offline.
- Still in airplane mode, start a sync. You get a clear failure message and the document is unchanged.
- Write, pause for a couple of seconds, then force-quit and reopen. All your ink is there, on the page and with the tool you left.
- Write and close the document straight away, without pausing. Reopen it. All your ink is there.
- Force-quit while you're in the middle of writing, then reopen. At most the last second or two of writing is missing, and the document opens normally.
- Find the PDF you imported in its original location (Files or Finder) and open it. It's unchanged, with none of your ink in it.
iCloud
- Edit on device A and sync, then sync on B and open it. Edit on B and sync, then sync on A. Both devices show both edits, and the document appears once.
- Put both devices in airplane mode and add different ink to the same page on each. Reconnect, then sync A, B, and A again. Both devices show all the ink from both, in a single document.
- Start syncing a large document and turn on airplane mode before it finishes. Reconnect and sync again. The document appears once, with the same title and all its ink.
Shared Folder
- Edit on device A and sync, then sync on B and open it. Edit on B and sync, then sync on A. Both devices show both edits, and the document appears once.
- Put both devices in airplane mode and add different ink to the same page on each. Reconnect, then sync A, B, and A again. Both devices show all the ink from both, in a single document.
- Start syncing a large document and turn on airplane mode before it finishes. Reconnect and sync again. The document appears once, with the same title and all its ink.
EduNotes Server
- Edit on device A and sync, then sync on B and open it. Edit on B and sync, then sync on A. Both devices show both edits, and the document appears once.
- Put both devices in airplane mode and add different ink to the same page on each. Reconnect, then sync A, B, and A again. Both devices show all the ink from both, in a single document.
- Start syncing a large document and turn on airplane mode before it finishes. Reconnect and sync again. The document appears once, with the same title and all its ink.
When both devices changed the same thing
- New ink and new pages from both devices are always kept. You're never asked to choose.
- The same mark moved or recoloured on both: the more recent change wins. Erased on one, edited on the other: the erase wins. Renamed on both: one name wins.
- Known issue: if both devices edit the same page's presenter note, one version of the note is lost. There's no need to report it.
- Expected extra documents: "Name (Conflicted Copy)" after Reset Sync State…, "Name copy" after opening the same
.edunotefile twice, and two documents with the same title if you imported the same PDF separately on each device. Any other duplicate, especially "Name 2" after a sync, is a Fail.
D Platform transitions Assigned to you
Run the group for the device you're on, plus the "All devices" group. Mark the other platforms' lines Not tested. Please don't fill your everyday device's storage to test low-storage behaviour; we cover that separately.
iPad
- Use Split View and Slide Over where supported, and the other available windowing modes.
- Resize the window repeatedly and rotate the device.
- Switch between Pencil and keyboard. Keyboard shortcuts and focus behave correctly.
- Present while multitasking.
Mac
- Resize windows and move in and out of full screen.
- Use multiple windows if supported. Keyboard shortcuts and focus behave correctly.
- Open and save through file dialogs.
- Remove an external display while EduNotes is using it.
iPhone
- All tools are reachable on the small screen, in both orientations.
- Take an incoming call mid-session, then return.
- Background and lock, then return.
- Present to an external display.
All devices
- Lose network mid-session. Failure messages are clear and retrying is safe.
- Open a document from a file provider that is unavailable. The message is clear.
- A long session of an hour or more stays stable.
E Accessibility and languages Assigned to you
Use the accessibility features you rely on day to day, and the languages you read natively. Mark the rest Not tested.
- With VoiceOver, complete: import → annotate and choose tools → present → save.
- Controls have sensible labels, focus moves in a logical order, and keyboard navigation works.
- Contrast is comfortable to read throughout.
- Larger Text and Reduce Motion are respected where supported.
- In each language you read: toolbars, dialogs, errors, and onboarding read correctly with no clipped text.
- Long filenames display sensibly in each language.
- No misleading or unnatural terminology. Tell us the better wording in the notes.
R Regression checklist Assigned to you
A quick pass across the core flows on a new build. Send one per build and device.
- Import an image and a PDF.
- Import a large PDF, with visible activity during import.
- Write, erase, undo/redo, and switch tools.
- Zoom and navigate without misplaced or missing ink.
- Close and reopen. Your latest work is there.
- Edit offline and reopen.
- Export and import. Content and ink are intact.
- Your sync method completes without missing work.
- Presentation shows content and live ink, with no controls visible.
- Disconnect and reconnect the display, then carry on.
- Resizing, multitasking, and interruptions on your device.
- Recheck anything that changed in this build and any bugs you reported earlier.
Reporting a problem
Bugs go through TestFlight: take a screenshot in EduNotes and choose Share Beta Feedback, or open TestFlight → EduNotes → Send Beta Feedback. Test cards and check-ins go through this page.
Start every report like this
[Severity] [Area] Short description
Example: [S1] [AirPlay] Audience screen stops updating after reconnect
Then include, where applicable
- Build, device model, OS, and your Pencil and display connection if relevant.
- What you did, what you expected, and what actually happened.
- How often, for example "3 of 5 attempts".
- Document size, page count, and whether it's scanned or densely annotated.
- Sync method, network state, and roughly when it happened.
- Whether you lost work, and whether reopening helped.
- A screenshot or screen recording if it's safe to share. For writing lag, a phone video of your hand and the screen together is ideal.
How serious is it?
Not sure? Just describe what it cost you and we'll set the severity.
- S0 Critical
- You lost work, a document was damaged, sync overwrote something without asking, or private content appeared on the audience screen.
- S1 High
- You couldn't finish a core task, the app crashed repeatedly, a presentation failed, or writing lagged noticeably.
- S2 Medium
- A real problem, but you found a way around it.
- S3 Low
- Cosmetic or a minor annoyance, such as clipped text or an odd translation.
For S0 problems, stop using that document and keep the copy as it is. We may ask for it.
Weekly check-in
Two minutes at the end of each week. Quiet weeks count. Tell us if you didn't get to test.
